Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
Summary
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program was established under a 1972 amendment to the Child Nutrition Act of 1966. The WIC program, eligible to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children up to age five, provides assistance for purchasing certain approved food items for those who are at nutritional risk. During his political career, Senator Dole was a supporter of the WIC program and pushed continuously for increases in its funding. Today, WIC helps over 8 million women, infants, and children in the United States.
